36. This Is Spinal Tap (1984) with Marc from Performance Anxiety
Wednesday May 27, 2020
Wednesday May 27, 2020
Last week we talked about The Beatles faux-documentary A Hard Day's Night, so what better movie to follow that up with than a mockumentary about a heavy metal band, This Is Spinal Tap. The timing of the move feels rather appropriate as well, given the recent loss of comedian Fred Willard, who appears in one of Spinal Tap's scenes. The movie is brought to us this week by Marc from the Performance Anxiety podcast. Rafe and Marc talk about the cultural impact of Spinal Tap, both in the comedy and musical worlds, and the brilliance of the leads, Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, and Michael McKean.

35. A Hard Day's Night (1964) with Lindsay Stamhuis
Thursday May 21, 2020
Thursday May 21, 2020
There's no denying the cultural behemoth that is The Beatles, but how many of you have actually seen their cinematic endeavors, which started in 1964 with A Hard Day's Night? Their film debut is an enduring work of art that has had a lasting effect on the movie world, including clear influences upon more contemporary rock band stories. Rafe and guest Lindsay Stamhuis talk about those influences, how A Hard Day's Night captures the personalities of the individual members of The Beatles, and even a possible Mandela Effect moment regarding one of the movie's punchlines.

34. Day of the Dead (1985) with George Heftler
Wednesday May 13, 2020
Wednesday May 13, 2020
This week's episode is one we've been holding onto for a while - given the state of the world it just didn't feel right to watch or discuss a post-apocalyptic zombie movie. But for some reason, the timing feels right now. We can't say whether that's because of the social commentary at the heart of George Romero's Day of the Dead or because the conversation Rafe has with guest George Heftler feels appropriate right now, but regardless the timing feels right. Listen as Rafe and George talk about zombie films as social commentary, fast moving zombies vs. slow moving zombies, the legacy Romero and specifically Day of the Dead has left, and more!

33. Harold and Maude (1971) with Brett Barnett
Wednesday May 06, 2020
Wednesday May 06, 2020
Happy (late) Star Wars day and happy (early) Mother's Day! This week was almost a lost episode as we were scheduled to record just as the COVID-19 pandemic broke out and locked everything down, but thankfully we managed to reconnect and make the conversation happen, and I'm certainly glad we did. Harold and Maude may be a darker comedy, but it is certainly a movie worth seeing and talking about. Rafe is joined by Brett Barnett and the two talk about life, death, the old filmmaking adage of "show, don't tell" and a movie that breaks a of storytelling expectations.

32. Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow (2014) with Daniel from Passion Fruits
Thursday Apr 30, 2020
Thursday Apr 30, 2020
We're still trying to keep things lighter given the current cultural climate, but "light" doesn't only have to mean comedy, as we are reminded of thanks to Daniel (of the Passion Fruits podcast) who brings Edge of Tomorrow for this week's conversation. Rafe and Daniel talk about Tom Cruise as an actor, time travel stories, try to dissect the ending of the movie, and ponder what direction the story might go in the announced plans for a sequel.

31. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) with Austin West
Wednesday Apr 22, 2020
Wednesday Apr 22, 2020
At first we were a bit worried that an episode about Monty Python and the Holy Grail would consist of just quoting the lines from the movie for an hour, but thankfully we were able to get past that and have a decent conversation about the movie. Join Rafe and guest Austin West as they talk about whether Monty Python is just "guy comedy," elements of the movie you may have missed the first (or second, or third) time through, and Rafe's son's reaction to seeing this comedy classic for the first time.

30. The Graduate (1967) with Chad Schreiner
Wednesday Apr 15, 2020
Wednesday Apr 15, 2020
You probably know the iconic moments from various film montages, but how many of you have actually seen the 1967 Dustin Hoffman comedy The Graduate? Rafe had not, but this week he fixes that, courtesy of his conversation with Script-Promptu member Chad Schreiner. Rafe and Chad discuss why parts of the movie don't hold up so well in today's culture, how brilliant Hoffman was as a comedic actor, and the importance of Simon & Garfunkel's music in this Mike Nichols' classic film.

29. Fletch (1985) with Price Ashe
Wednesday Apr 08, 2020
Wednesday Apr 08, 2020
If you're looking for lighter-fare, as we're trying to focus on for a little while, it doesn't get much lighter than Fletch, the 1985 Chevy Chase comedy about an investigative reporter who "changes identities more than he changes his underwear." This week Reel Rundown co-host Price Ashe joins Rafe to talk about Fletch, Chevy Chase, contemporary actors who could take Chase's mantle, and oddly enough, Tiger King. Also, be sure to go to Podchaser before April 16th and leave reviews for your favorite podcasts to help raise money for Meals on Wheels.

28. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013) with Alex Kunka
Wednesday Apr 01, 2020
Wednesday Apr 01, 2020
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is an almost perfect HNST movie. It brags an impressive cast, including Ben Stiller (who also directed), Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott, and Shirley MacLaine. It has a surprising amount of substance, leading to an excellent conversation about the movie and how Rafe and guest Alex Kunka related to it. But somehow, it's also largely overlooked. It's definitely a movie worth your time and Rafe and Alex wind up having a fantastic discussion about the movie, life choices (and maybe some regrets), online dating, and how our perceptions are impacted by social media.

27. Labyrinth (1986) with Emily Slade
Wednesday Mar 25, 2020
Wednesday Mar 25, 2020
Labyrinth is a film that has been maligned on several episodes of the podcast thus far, so it's about time someone came on the show to defend it. That "someone" is Emily Slade, who provides one of our most entertaining episodes to date. Rafe and Emily discuss his previous remarks about Jennifer Connelly's acting in Labyrinth, investigate the relationship her character, Sarah, has with the different denizens of the puzzle (including David Bowie's Jareth), and explore more aspects of the movie than you probably thought were even possible. A definite must-listen-to episode!
