45. I Come In Peace aka Dark Angel (1990) with Robert Solomon
Thursday Sep 10, 2020
Thursday Sep 10, 2020
When you think '80s and '90s action, you tend to think of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone's powerhouse blockbusters. But there's a vast array of B-movie sci-fi action films from the time period, starring some of the action stars who would support Arnold and Sly in their bigger endeavors. This week's movie is one of those: I Come In Peace (also known as Dark Angel) starring Dolph Lundgren. Our guest, Robert Solomon, brings a great conversation about I Come In Peace, B-movies in general, and about as many tangents as we can go down in a single sitting.

44. Disney's Beauty and the Beast (1991) with Hem Cleveland
Thursday Aug 27, 2020
Thursday Aug 27, 2020
This week's guest, Hem Cleveland, is a podcaster and voice artist, so it seems appropriate that she picked an animated movie to talk about on the show: Disney's Beauty and the Beast. We discuss vocal performing, Disney archetypes, anti-intellectualism, and a talking candelabra, as we dig through the first animated film to get an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.

43. Batman Returns (1992) with Joe McDonnell
Thursday Aug 06, 2020
Thursday Aug 06, 2020
Guest Joe McDonnell started out just looking for a podcast that discussed Tim Burton's only directed sequel, Batman Returns. Little did he know he would soon be taking part in a conversation as a guest on a show doing exactly that. Rafe and Joe discuss how well Burton's Batman follow up holds up today, the impact of stuffing a superhero film with villains, and how contested classifying Batman Returns as "a movie for kids" or "a movie for adults" wound up being, to the point that even McDonalds had an opinion on the matter.

42. John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) with Drew Meyer
Thursday Jul 23, 2020
Thursday Jul 23, 2020
John Carpenter's The Thing is a creepy enough movie on its own, but add in the context of 2020's pandemic situation and a movie where an undetectable threat infiltrates an isolated science base suddenly gets a lot creepier. Rafe is joined by Who & Company's Drew Meyer to talk about the impact of context, why this movie almost ruined the careers of those involved, the influence of Agatha Christie on genre films, and more!

41. Monte Walsh (1970) with Jeff Mohr
Thursday Jul 09, 2020
Thursday Jul 09, 2020
We haven't had a proper western on the show yet, but that changes this week as we look at the end of the cowboy era in Monte Walsh, starring Lee Marvin and Jack Palance. The source of the movie is a bit unusual, as guest Jeff Mohr (of Gruesome Magazine) is usually a horror guy, but his love for this movie quickly becomes apparent. Listen as Rafe and Jeff talk about the end of the western era, the 2003 remake, and more!

40. Warcraft (2016) with Luke Kunka
Thursday Jul 02, 2020
Thursday Jul 02, 2020
This week, guest Luke Kunka brings Warcraft to the show for discussion (if that name sounds familiar, it's because he's the brother of Alex Kunka who brought The Secret Life of Walter Mitty for a previous episode). Rafe and Luke talk about the video game adaptation and how it changed the story created through Warcraft games and novels for a big screen retelling. We also discuss the idea of fan service, and how you create moments that fans can appreciate without alienating newcomers to a franchise.

39. The Emperor's New Groove (2000) with Scotty Moore
Thursday Jun 25, 2020
Thursday Jun 25, 2020
We're diving into our first animated Disney feature this week with guest Scotty Moore of the BS Network. Scotty is out to set a record for the most podcast appearances and we were happy to have him on our show to add to his count. Rafe and Scotty discuss the train wreck that was the making of Kingdom of the Sun (which eventually became The Emperor's New Groove), crying at Disney films, and the documentary The Sweatbox (which can currently be found on YouTube).

38. Blood Simple (1984) with Chris Ecklund
Thursday Jun 18, 2020
Thursday Jun 18, 2020
This week is a special episode for Rafe - not only is it a great conversation about Blood Simple, the first movie from the Coen Brothers, but the guest is one of Rafe's childhood friends. Rafe and Chris met in high school and immediately became good friends, sharing a love of movies, gaming, and video games. This week's episode reconnects them after a decade as talk about the Coen Brothers' debut film, which is an absolute must see film.

37. Sharknado (2013) with Sara Newell
Thursday Jun 11, 2020
Thursday Jun 11, 2020
Summer should be a time for popcorn-blockbuster films, but with the state of the world right now the closest we're going to get are the ones we can stream, so what better time to check out 2013's Sharknado (which had a limited one-night-only theatrical release). Rafe is joined by Sara Newell to talk about the first in SyFy's shark-laden franchise. We start to lay down rules for a Sharknado drinking game, but mostly keep saying how absolutely absurd this week's choice is.

Intermission: #podcastblackout
Wednesday Jun 03, 2020
Wednesday Jun 03, 2020
With the events currently going on in the world, and particularly the United States, it doesn't feel quite appropriate to release an episode this week (especially with the silly movie scheduled next) so I'm joining in the #podcastblackout movement to stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter protests taking place. I encourage anyone who can to get involved in some way, but more importantly be safe and be kind.
