Thursday Sep 02, 2021
Thursday Sep 02, 2021
We're talking football this week with Joe McDonnell, who previously appeared to talk about Batman Returns. This time Joe picked the 1996 football comedy Necessary Roughness. Listen as Joe and Rafe bond over their appreciation of Scott Bakula, rant about Rob Schneider, and Joe tries to get Rafe, who is notoriously not a "sports person," a little more into sports movies.

75. The King of Comedy (1982) with Thomas Mariani
Thursday Jul 22, 2021
Thursday Jul 22, 2021
Thomas Mariani returns to the podcast. Previously we've talked about Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story and The Muppets Take Manhattan. This time Rafe and Thomas talk about an underappreciated Martin Scorsese film, The King of Comedy, which was driven back into the spotlight a few years ago because of the film Joker. Just how much of an influence did Scorsese have on Todd Phillips's movie? Has Rafe come around on Robert De Niro yet? And how relevant is a satirical black comedy from the '80s today? We discuss all of this and more!

Thursday Jul 15, 2021
Thursday Jul 15, 2021
This week Rafe is joined by guest Valerie Moss to talk about a classic adventure movie from their childhoods, The Goonies. We talk about why this movie was so relatable to us as kids (and why kids today might not relate as much to it), the power of its ensemble cast, whether we'd want to see a sequel, the recent passing of Richard Donner, and why even the bad guys are an amazing part of The Goonies story.

Monday Jul 12, 2021

We missed a Beyond the Screens last week due to the Fourth of July, so we've got some catching up to do. Rafe also provides a brief, spoiler-free review of the latest entry into the MCU, Black Widow. We'll see you on Thursday for our next regular episode!

73. I Love You, Man (2009) with Alex Kunka
Thursday Jul 08, 2021
Thursday Jul 08, 2021
Alex Kunka returns to the show to talk about one of Rafe's favorite comedies, I Love You, Man. The two talk about the different perspectives they have on the movie, from Rafe having few friends to Alex's engagement and pending wedding. Along the way they talk about some of the questions the movie raises, like the similarities in romantic and platonic relationships, the problem with the stereotypical male image, and the lack of rules for making - and maintaining - friendships.

Thursday Jul 01, 2021
Thursday Jul 01, 2021
We have two members of The Lucky Die returning this week to talk about Disney's groundbreaking Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Hem Cleveland last appeared to discuss Disney's Beauty and the Beast and Eyþór was on earlier this year to talk about Stardust. This week Rafe and guests talk about mixing animation and live-action, the brilliant (and often overlooked) human performances in the movie, the novel the movie was based on, and how open people would be to the scrapped sequel plans for the film. Eyþór may go off on a tirade or two along the way.
