7. Robot & Frank (2012) with Ron Telsch
Wednesday Oct 30, 2019
Wednesday Oct 30, 2019
Growing old is an inevitability, and in the process we do tend to lose some of our memory. The movie Robot & Frank looks at this aspect of life as part of its story about an unusual friendship between an elderly man and a robot. Rafe's dad, Ron Telsch, shares this movie for our discussion this week as we talk about geriatric heists, robots, and "nice" movies.

6. The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977) with Chris Tallant
Wednesday Oct 23, 2019
Wednesday Oct 23, 2019
The Kentucky Fried Movie is an example of a comedy that does not hold up very well as time passes. That does not mean it's a bad movie, however, and the relevance of the film is easily seen, if for no other reason than it gave us the team of Zucker, Abrahams, Zucker who went on to make Airplane! and the Naked Gun. This week guest Chris Tallant and I talk about creating comedy in the current "woke culture," how to approach films that have aged out of their humor, the Vudu Family System, and more!

5. Willow (1988) with Monica Siegfred
Wednesday Oct 16, 2019
Wednesday Oct 16, 2019
It seems appropriate that a friend made through World of Warcraft would bring an epic fantasy tale like Willow to the table for this week's conversation. We talk about the criticism of George Lucas making another derivative story and how that criticism really didn't have an impact on how much Rafe and guest Monica Siegfred enjoyed the story of Willow Ufgood, Elora Danaan, and Madmartigan on their epic quest to save the kingdom from evil. Is the movie still good or does it suffer from the "toxic impulse" of nostalgia? How well does it hold up now that The Lord of the Rings has had a real adaptation realized on film? Listen to find out our thoughts.

4. The Mission (1986) with Owen Merritt
Wednesday Oct 09, 2019
Wednesday Oct 09, 2019
Somehow I had not even heard of The Mission before Owen Merritt brought it to the table as his pick this week, let alone seen it. The movie immediately brought to mind sociological implications of missions and conversion, which we talk about as we dive into the movie. Should those concerns be considered when viewing historic narratives such as this one? How can a film with powerhouses like Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons so easily be missed by contemporary artists? Oh, and should Martin Scorsese's comments on what is and isn't cinema be so strongly reacted to? Listen to this week's episode to see what we think!

3. Princess Mononoke (1997) with Kat Milliner
Wednesday Oct 02, 2019
Wednesday Oct 02, 2019
This week we step outside of Rafe's comfort zone and take a look at Princess Mononoke, Hayao Miyazaki's beautiful animated feature that explores the dangers of ecological abuse and colonialism. How relevant is this film's message and what are the dangers we risk if we ignore them? What are the benefits to presenting a story in a balanced fashion instead of sticking to a more traditional narrative? And how does Miyazaki respond to the idea of having his lengthy stories cut down for American audiences? Listen as we dive into these topics, thanks to newcomer Kat Milliner.

Wednesday Sep 25, 2019
Thomas Mariani, co-host of the podcast Double Edged Double Bill (and former contributor to the Weekly Blend Audio Show) brings Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story to the podcast for discussion. Why did Rafe avoid this one when it was in theaters and how does he react to it now? How did this overlooked comedy impact the musical biopic genre? Should John C. Reilly break up with his "bad boyfriend" Will Ferrell?
